What is the community of Squatted Prosfygika?
The State’s plan for the forced eviction of Prosfygika
The community of Squatted Prosfygika is an autonomous squatted community located in Ampelokipi, Athens, with over 400 residents; Greeks, immigrants and refugees, 50 children, marginalized groups of people, cancer patients etc. It constitutes of 22 autonomous structures whose main goals are the self-sufficiency, well-being and horizontal organzing of the community’s residents. All structures are open to everyone and work on a basis of mutual aid and solidarity.
Recently, the region of Attica commenced the planning for the violent eviction of the community and the prosecution of its residents, something that entails the displacement of the hundreds of its vulnerable members. The region is merely following orders from the Greek state, which wishes to destroy the largest autonomous, horizontally organized community in Greece (and one of the largest in the entirety of Europe).
They claim that they are attempting to provide social housing; however, since Prosfygika has already succeeded in doing so, and since there are about 80 thousand empty abandoned buildings which remain untouched in Athens, the State’s argument does not stand, and is a pathetic excuse for constantly trying to tear down a community, simply because it cannot gain anything from it.
About a year ago, the squatted community had already announced its decision to fully renovate its buildings with its own funding. The region of Attica’s plan merely attempts to destroy it before it can finish the renovations, for the exploitation of public capital.
The members of the community of Squatted Prosfygika have made it clear that they will not back down until the State adheres to their demands for the immediate cancellation of the eviction plan, and the stay of Prosfygika’s residents in their home, in which they have connected socially and culturally.
On February 5th 2026, Aristotelis Xatzis, a member of Prosfygika started a hunger strike until death, for the support of the community’s demands. Today, on June 23 2026, he is on his 138th day of hunger strike, in a highly crucial condition for his health. On May 1st 2026, Suzon Doppagne, another resident of the community, also began hunger striking until death, and is currently on her 53rd day, also in a very dangerous health condition. Countless protests and acts of solidarity, in Greece and internationally have taken place, with significant movements such as the Zapatistas and Rojava continuing to actively show their support for Prosfygika.
Having offered general information on the Squatted Prosfygika, it is time to state the main purpose of this text; to call for solidarity and action, as soon as possible, as the community is currently facing the most crucial moments for its resistance.
As difficult as it is to admit, we are getting closer and closer to possibly losing our comrade, Aristotelis Xatzis. Provided that he is already on his 138th day without nourishment, it is only a matter of time (Note that the longest recorded duration of a hunger strike has been 145 days, not too far from where Aristos is at right now)
A few hours ago from when this text was written, A. Xatzis was transported to a hospital which refused to provide him the necessary care.
The Greek state is letting hunger strikers A. Xatzis and S. Doppagne lose their lives, merely for its own financial gain. Any and all action, and any and all attempts to raise awareness on Prosfygika, its community and struggle, are needed; especially at this time.
As it was mentioned before, the community of Squatted Prosfygika are the largest autonomous, horizontally structured community in Greece, and one of the largest in Europe, and home to over 400 people, 50 of whom are children. They have been able to create something that is deemed by most impossible and “utopian”; a society whose first priority is freedom and well-being for all, and not capital and power. The values and the collective efforts of the people of Prosfygika can never be replaced by any kind of plan of oppression and exploitation of the State.
THE COMMUNITY’S DEMANDS:
IMMEDIATE CANCELLATION OF THE CONTRACT BY THE REGION OF ATTICA
ALL RESIDENTS OF PROSFYGIKA TO REMAIN IN THEIR HOMES, IN THE PLACE AND IN THE AREA WHERE THEY LIVE AND HAVE ESTABLISHED SOCIAL AND CULTURAL TIES
CONCRETE GUARANTEES TO BE GIVEN FOR THE RESTORATION OF PROSFYGIKA BY THE NON-PROFIT LEGAL ENTITY “RESIDENTS AND FRIENDS OF PROSFYGIKA ALEXANDRAS AV.” WHICH IS GOING TO BE SELF-FINANCED, WITHOUT ANY PUBLIC MONEY BEING SPENT.
